A Terry Roberts musing
I start this musing from an unusual scene….
Imagine the beautiful afternoon blue sky, reflected by an azure blue sea, a fine 4/5 FATBOY breeze…..
I am lying on my sail ½ a mile out to sea about 50 metres from the windward mark. I have capsized – again, I am alone and have just added to the general blueness by a stream of Anglo-Saxon that 60 years has armed me with.
The final day of the Terry Roberts open meeting, just Begafigo participants but frankly that is the rest of the islands loss. This time the committee decided to integrate the handicap racing with the Optimist sailors. Please note Optimist, junior is no longer relevant. No capsize will go unnoticed or unapplauded, sail to close and you will get a bailer full!
So all a fatboy needs for a great weekends racing. The coach had even dusted down his laser showing us all how to do it. Members flying in to race, especially a family from the USA, which reminds me….
Back to the daydream, Andreas in his 4.7 was getting closer, actually now in front and so far ahead with his handicap advantage in fact. I went back to practicing Anglo-Saxon.
I hate sailing especially when it gets exciting with multiple boats competing to get round a mark first. All that shouting and manoeuvring, blood pumping fast, adrenaline levels high….REALLY hate it!!!
When I think of the spent brownie points, I shall eventually calm down and remember to congratulate the winners, thank profusely the race crew, and be an adult – maybe…..
Fatboy….
